Define terms: Conference call, web-conferencing, webinar, webcast

November 11, 2010 in News, Resources, Services

It is amazing how much we take for granted in the industry of which we work. Do the people (your clients) understand the language you use on a day-to-day basis? We would like to take this opportunity to define these four common terms: conference call, webinar, webcasting and web-conferencing.We are putting this document together as a resource for you to not only understand more thoroughly the technology you may be using, but with the intention to help you use these tools of communication more thoroughly by knowing their scope.

What is a conference call? A conference call is a telephone call in which the calling party wishes to have more than one called party listen in to the audio portion of the call. The conference calls may be designed to allow the called party to participate during the call, or the call may be set up so that the called party merely listens into the call and cannot speak.

Can you define Webinar? A webinar is a neologism to describe a specific type of web conference. It is typically one-way, from the speaker to the audience with limited audience interaction, such as in a webcast. A webinar can be collaborative and include polling and question & answer sessions to allow full participation between the audience and the presenter.

What is a Webcast? A webcast is a media file distributed over the Internet using streaming media technology to distribute a single content source to many simultaneous listeners/viewers. A webcast may either be distributed live or on demand. Essentially, webcasting is “broadcasting” over the Internet.

Can you define Web conferencing? Web conferencing is used to conduct live meetings, training, or presentations via the Internet. In a web conference, each participant sits at his or her own computer and is connected to other participants via the internet. This can be either a downloaded application on each of the attendees' computers or a web-based application where the attendees access the meeting by clicking on a link distributed by e-mail (meeting invitation) to enter the conference. Please do not hesitate to leave any questions in the comments section below. We are happy to assist you with any and all of your conferencing needs. Until next time, Happy Conferencing, and webinaring!
