Why December 2nd?
Steve decided to launch the new site on December 2nd to honor his Father turning 90! Clifford Heaton still helps on the family farm in Illinois. He gets up early every morning and works a full day combining corn.

“Fortunately he and my brother got the corn in, so he won’t still be in the field harvesting on his birthday,” Steve added.

Customer Testimonials
Tony Sauer, Conference Calls Unlimited’s Sales Manager, said, “One major feature of the new site is that we give prominence to customer testimonials. By showing what customers are saying about our services, not only do we show examples of our commitment to customer satisfaction, but we also promote and appreciate our customers.”

Conference Calling and Driving Do Not Mix

Nov

Recently, a member of our company drove back from a great evening of fun in DesMoines where Garrison Keillor and his Prairie Home Companion show had performed. She noticed a lot of cars swerving into her lane. Her first thought, “Is everybody drunk tonight?” And then she realized the culprit: drivers using their cell phones. The New York Times has an interesting article called  High Tech Baby Sitter Gets Drivers Off Cell Phone that addresses this issue. Some companies have instituted high tech solutions that prevent employees from using cell phones while driving. Every day there are thousands of drivers dialing into conferencing systems to discuss business. This certainly imperils them and other drivers on the road.

We have a low tech solution for conference calling drivers–please pull into a service area and conduct the call from there.

Will Power Plants Go the Way of the Main Frame?

Nov

PCs and the web have opened up information over the last 15 years. And now we stand on the threshhold of an energy revolution of the same or greater magnitude. Everyone expects this to include alternative energy and smart grids. One of the drawbacks of these envisioned approaches is the long distance transport of electricity from the Great Plains and the Midwest to the energy markets on the East and West Coasts. Bloom Energy has come up with solid oxide fuel cells that can run everything from plant wastes to natural gas. The CEO of Bloom, K.R. Sridhar, has field tested Bloom boxes for two years and says that his company is ready to go to the global market with a product that is cost competitive with our current electric energy systems. For example,  a 5 KW Bloom box the size of a coffee table can power a 5000 square foot home. According to Lane Wallace at the Atlantic Monthly, the ultimate killer app is:

Processing wind- or solar generated with water to create storable oxygen and hydrogen then reversing the process to generate electricity at night or in low-wind or cloudy conditions.

Bloom boxes can operate independently of any power grid. They can be set up anywhere and operate on anything with carbon and hydrogen in them. Used in conjunction with windpower  they can generate and store energy to be used at times of low energy. What it all means is that power plants and power lines could go the way of the main frame.

According to Wainhouse Research North America leads the world in conference calls. 49.7 million NA workers paricipate in conference calls this past year, Western Europe follows with 10.5 million employees using conference calling services. Japan weighs in as the heaviest user in Asia at  742,000 employees.

Of the 51 billion hosted minutes i.e. automated reservationless calls on the planet North America uses 38.4 billion minutes, Western Europe 8.2 billion, followed by Japan with 626 million minutes.

Minutes in North America grew 20% from 2008 to 2009 while revenues are projected to grow 4%. In the Asia Pacific minutes grew 35% and revenues grew 27%.

This conference call collaboration phenomena began to pick up speed in 1998-1999 and then began to grow logarithmically in 2001-2002 and has grown at a slower rate in the last several years.
